The traditional work of the municipality has centered on the textile industry and agriculture (wheat, barley, corn, sunflowers). Some of the largest firms include:

  • Tri-Co, one of the largest sock producers in Bulgaria; distributes domestically and for export; 180 employees
  • Cherven 2000, a producer of machines for use in mills; 60 employees
  • Tim, high-quality pantyhose; domestic distribution only; 40 employees
  • Elkon, extension cords and other electronic appliances; 50 employees
  • Stefan Stefanov – KONTEKS, men’s dress shirts for export and domestic use; 23 employees
  • Plamen Penchev, men’s dress shirts for export and domestic use; 20 employees
  • Ikon, plastic inflatable beach toys; 20 employees
  • And 10 farm co-ops, each with an average of 28 employees

These enterprises provide for a considerable number of jobs and form a large part of the local economy. The average salary of those working in the municipality is between 150 – 200 lev a month (or around $70 - $100 /mo.). The major exporters are the firms Elkon (to Belgium), and Tri-Co (Finland and Denmark), which currently is working with partners from Israel.

Agriculture
There are 182,600 dectares of farmland in the municipality, about 30 percent of which are uncultivated. The agricultural work is conducted by the 10 co-ops and private farmers. The largest crop grown in the area is wheat, with it’s production taking up 35 % of the farmed land, followed by sunflower production (29 % of farmed land, mainly for oil production), corn (17.6 %), barley (just over 5 %), and various vegetables (13 %). The leading agricultural area in the municipality is Gorno Ablanovo, which farms almost 65 % of its arable land.

Stock-Breeding
Agriculture and animal herding are the base of the economic structure of the municipality. Throughout the area there are over 2,360 head of cattle, making an average of 18 per 1, 000 dectares of grazing pasture. The largest amount are in the villages of Batin (31 head per 1,000 dectares) and Exar Yosev (23 per). Whereas the smallest number of cattle are in the village of Brestovitsa.
Comparatively high is amount of sheep breeding that goes on. The average number of sheep is 82 per 1,000 dectares of pasture. Borovo itself boasts the highest number (154), followed by Batin (113) and Exar Yosev (88).
And finally, goat herding is also a major part of the economic make-up, with an average of 30 head per 1,000 dectares of pasture. Borovo again has largest herds (87 per 1,000 dectares) followed by Batin (44).
